A little bit of everything:    Our list of recommended CDs

from:   Carmel Music Co.

DAWG TALES: THE ACOUSTIC TRIBUTE TO DAVID GRISMAN is an instrumental homage to the man widely regarded as the world's premier mandolinist.

This CD is really a tribute to the Dawg's compositional skills. His original music is interpreted here using a variety of instruments including piano, cavaquinho, violin, viola, mandolin, mandola, mandocello, dobro, banjo, and steel drums. The intrumentalists are just as varied: Begee Adair on piano, Aubrey Haynie on fiddle, Mark Schatz on banjo, the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble, and many more.

Don Stiernberg's latest CD "Unseasonally Cool" is a must have for jazz mandolin buffs. It has a great "straight ahead jazz" feel to it that we all love here at Carmel Music. His friendships and playing time with Jethro Burns and David Grisman have influenced his music and playing in the most positive way but his own individuality comes right out on this session which features horns and percussion as well as the core group of guitar, bass, and drums.

Tone Poems is a recorded document of American mandolins and flat top guitars from the 1890's to the 1990's. Tony Rice and David Grisman play duets on 34 vintage and custom instruments and besides the beautiful music played by these two masters of their instruments, the CD comes with a 40 page color booklet with historical notes and beautiful photographs of the instruments.

Tone Poems II is a project to follow up Tone Poems, but this time featuring the great archtop jazz guitars and DG teams up with Scottish virtuoso Martin Taylor. Harp guitars, Lloyd Loar L-5's, D'Angelico's, Strombergs, Super 400's and more make this another amazing compilation complete with color booklet, historical notes and photos.

Oscar Aleman was Argentina's greatest swing guitarist. His band has a distinctly "hot club" feel though the influence of American Jazz is also clearly felt. He headed up Josephine Baker's band in Paris, was friends with Django Reinhardt, and returned from Paris to his native Argentina to be a star of Buenos Aires nightlife during the '40's. This set is a real 'must' for any jazz guitarist's collection.

Jacob do Bandolim is considered Brazil's greatest choro mandolinist - this music is full of melody, rhythm and life. These original recordings from Brazil are a tremendous introduction into the choro style of music. Besides mandolin, the bands consist of nylon six and seven string guitars, cavaquinho (a steel strung ukelele style instrument) and percussion.

Paul Glasse is a great swing/bebop mandolinist as well as composer/arranger. His group includes piano, bass, and drums and so has a strong straight ahead jazz feel as opposed to a more 'jazz/grass' type feel. We are currently offering his out of print CD "Road to Home" at the special price of $10.
